A huntable game
Indeed, the badger is considered game in France where it can be hunted nine and a half months a year. Worse, in a large number of departments including Charente-Maritime, a period of additional underground hunting opens from May 15. What is it about ? Dogs are sent into the badgers’ burrows to corner them until the hunters manage to dig them out. After hours of stress and suffering, the badger is shot or stabbed. “It’s a shocking practice and from another age,” comments Stéphane Guenneteau, departmental delegate of Aspas.
He goes further: “Underground hunting is in contradiction with the Environmental Code since species that can be hunted underground can sometimes coexist with protected species that can be injured or killed during hunting actions. We know that badger colonies can also accommodate bats, otters, amphibians and reptiles. And then there is also the question of the badgers, still dependent on their mother on May 15, who find themselves orphans after the actions of hunting.
