Biarritz relegated to Pro D2, Perpignan maintains hope

The hope was long gone but the ax of relegation to Pro D2 had not yet officially fallen. It’s been done since this Saturday and the big home defeat of Biarritz Olympique against Castres (13-48).

Beaten for the seventh time this season in Aguiléra, the soundtrack is now fifteen points behind the thirteenth, Perpignan, a gap impossible to fill when there are only two matches left.

Matthew Clarkin’s men were never able to win this meeting, conceding three tries in the first period (6-22 at halftime) and a fourth just after the restart. If they have a time threatened to deprive the Castres of the offensive bonus thanks to a try from Domvo, the Biarrots ended up cracking at the end of the match with three new tries conceded.

USAP stronger than Brive

Perpignan, he is still thirteenth in the Top 14, a place synonymous at the end of the season with a play-off against the unfortunate finalist of Pro D2, but the Catalans have made up for part of the delay they were counting on Brive (12th) by beating their direct opponent at Aimé-Giral (27-10).

In this often bumpy match, the Corréziens had nevertheless taken the lead thanks to an early try from Tuicuvu (5th). But the USAP relied on the power of its forwards, in particular that of Faasalele, author of a double, to race in the lead.

Finally, the Perpignanais may even regret not having taken an attacking bonus at the end of the match which would have reduced them to two small points in the Brive classification two days from the end. Three points behind, they will need to win at least one of their last two matches, at Castres or against Bordeaux-Bègles.
