If Stade Rennais manages to beat all its competitors at the post in the fight for second place, it will largely owe it to Martin Terrier. At 25, the French striker is simply living his best season. Considered a great hope for football when he played for Lille, Terrier was snatched by OL in 2018 after a one-year loan to Strasbourg. But it was with the Rouge-et-Noir that the native of Armentières exploded.
At Les Gones, it’s a record of 10 goals and 2 assists in 55 Ligue 1 matches. Not incredible. Fortunately for him, Florian Maurice believed in him when he left Lyon to go to Brittany. Recruited for 12 M€ in 2020, Terrier signed a decent first season (9 goals, 7 assists in 34 L1 matches) before exploding. A decisive double passer against OM, the Rennes striker has a remarkable record: 21 goals and 4 offers in 36 games. A metamorphosis for a discreet but very effective player.
“He is consistent and at a very high level”
After the success against Marseille (voted man of the match by our editorial team), Terrier was satisfied to have inflated his statistics as a passer. “The most important thing is the victory tonight. If it allows individualities to shine, that’s always good. It’s true that this season I scored a lot of goals, I didn’t necessarily make assists, even if sometimes my teammates crunched a bit (laughs). It’s always good to be decisive and I’m someone who knows how to score too.. But how to explain such a change? At a time when some observers such as Thierry Henry would like to see him in the France team, Bruno Genesio explained the metamorphosis of his protege at a press conference.
“Several things, he first matured, he also realized that he had great potential and that he had to exploit it better than he had done before. He is in a context where he feels perfectly good because he has everyone’s confidence. He has players around him who rely on him. Inevitably, it changes a player. He arrives at an age where he is fully mature. He had a great game. Apart from his two assists, he was very good in the link he brought between our midfield and our attack. He was very good in his races behind the Marseille defense. He confirms that he has been successful over a season. It’s a little bit new. The other seasons, he did good things and then sometimes we saw him less for a month, a month and a half and then he reappeared again. There, since the start of the season, he has been consistent and at a very high level, it shows that he has reached a milestone. But I’m not surprised. I have always praised his qualities as a player and as a man so he is rewarded.. It remains to be seen whether a more prestigious award could come in the coming days, from a certain Didier Deschamps…
